Message of Eid - The Caliph and the New Clothes
The little boy came running to his mother crying with a request.
"Jarir and Mughiz have both got new clothes for Eid. Can I have some
new clothes as well?" The mother picked him up and wiped his tears.
Their mother, Fatima bint Abdul Malik(RA), was no ordinary woman. Her
father, grandfather and each of her four brothers were at one time or
another Caliph and leader of the Muslim Ummah. In fact, her own
husband was the present Caliph, Umar ibn Abdul Aziz(RA) – who ruled
the world's largest empire that stretched from the Atlantic to the
Indian oceans. She promised him that she would check with his father
to see if he could have new clothes for Eid.
When Umar ibn Abdul Aziz returned home, his wife related her sons
request to him. The Caliph had a pained look in his eyes. "Fatima, you
know how much I value my children, but all the money I have is in
front of you", he said motioning towards the sparsely furnished hut.
Though a Caliph, Umar took care to live honestly and did much to
ensure justice. Fatima agreed with her husband, but she said that
maybe it would be possible to buy very cheap clothes for him and he
would just be happy with something new to wear. The tears have left
satins on his cheeks. Finally, the Caliph, saddened by the plight,
agreed and wrote a letter to his treasurer requesting that his pay be
advanced a month early so that he could buy his child something to
wear on Eid.
But the honest and pious Caliph had an equally honest treasurer who
wrote a letter in reply to the Caliph. The Caliph read the letter with
tears flowing from his eyes: "Amir Ul-Mumineen, I have great respect
for you and I trust and obey you completely. However, if you could
guarantee to me that you will live through the next month and do your
service to the people (which will entitle you to your pay) then the
money can be advanced to you. If you cannot give the assurance of your
life, then how can the treasury pay you and why are you taking the
rights of the poor,orphans and widows onto your shoulders?"
Caliph Umar ibn Abdul Aziz realised his mistake. Fatima bint Abdul
Malik, washed the old clothes. The day of Eid arrived and the whole
area of Damascus was buzzing with joy and celebration with people clad
in their new attires. Caliph Umar ibn Abdul Aziz also set out for the
Eid Prayer holding the hand of his son, both father and son wearing
their clean old clothing. The young boy's face shone brightly, as he
walked alongside his father, convinced that the eternal pleasure and
comforts of Jannah(Paradise) are by far superior to the comforts of
this temporary world.
One has to wonder if they were made from the same dust as us. Once we
(Muslims) were kings on this Earth, but it wasn't because we were
large in number that we were respected. It wasn't because we were
powerful that we were victorious. It wasn't because we were successful
that we were admired. It wasn't because our women were beautiful that
they were treated with honour and dignity. It wasn't because we were
intelligent that our example was emulated. It was all due to the faith
of Islam. Sometimes, it's worthwhile reflecting on how far we've
fallen so we know how high we need to climb.

Whoever controls his belly controls all good deeds

Hunger of the Salaf
It is reported from Ibn Sîrîn – Allâh have mercy on him – that a man
once said to Ibn 'Umar – Allâh be pleased with him:
Can we offer you some Jawârish? He inquired, "And what is Jawârish?"
The man replied, "It is something that will help you digest your food
if you get too full up." Ibn 'Umar said, "I have not eaten my fill for
four months – not because I cannot find food, but because I have lived
with people who used to eat their fill at times and go hungry at
others.
Abû Dâwûd, Al-Zuhd article 325.
It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him – said:
By He in whose Hand is my soul, I have lived amongst people who never
ordered food to be prepared for themselves If [food] was presented to
one of them, he would eat, otherwise, he would be silent; and he would
not care if it was hot or cold.
Abû Nu'aym, Hilyatu Al-Awliyâ` 6:270.
It is also reported that he said:
By Allâh, I have lived amongst people who when taking lunch, if they
were about to be full, would stop eating.
Ibid.
It is reported that Al-Fudayl b. 'Ayyâd – Allâh have mercy on him – said:
Two things harden the heart, too much talking and too much food.
Ibn Hibbân Al-Bustî, Rawdatu Al-'Uqalâ` p45, Matba'ah Al-Sunnah
Al-Muhammadîyah 1949.
It is reported that Mâlik b. Dînâr – Allâh have mercy on him – said:
It is unfitting for a believer that his belly becomes his greatest
concern, or that his desires dominate him.
Ibn Abî Al-Dunyâ, Al-Jû' (The Book of Hunger) article 105.
It is also reported that he said:
Whoever controls his belly controls all good deeds.
Ibid. article 99.
It is reported that the Tâbi'î (Successor) 'Uqbah b. Wassâj – Allâh
have mercy on him – was once at a wedding reception where many kinds
of dishes were offered and people started trying one dish after
another. He started to cry, and said:
"I found the first part of this Ummah fearing all this upon
themselves." And he ate only from one dish.
Ibid. article 261.
It is reported that Muhammad b. Sîrîn – Allâh have mercy on him – said:
A man from the companions of the Prophet – praise and peace of Allâh
be upon him – would sometimes go three days without finding anything
to eat, so he would grill some animal skin and eat that. If he
couldn't find anything at all, he would [tie] a rock to himself to
straighten his back.
Ibid. article 61.

Sunnah Acts of Juma
1.To take a bath. (Bukhari , Tirmidhi , Ibne Majah)
2.To wear nice and clean clothes. (Abu Dawood, Chapter of Ghusal on
the day of Jumu'ah)
3.To proceed early to the Masjid.(Tirmidhi ,Ibne Majah)
4.To go to the Masjid on foot. (Ibne Majah)
5.To try to sit as close as possible to the Imaam. (Ibne Majah , Tirmidhi)
6.If the Saffs (rows) are already filled, one should not jump over the
shoulders of the musallies in order to get to the front.(Abu Dawood)
7.One should not do any futile action eg. one should not fiddle with
one's clothes or fingers. (Ibne Majah)
8.To listen to the Khutba attentively. (Tirmidhi ,Ibne Majah)
9.The person who recites Surah Kahaf on Friday will be bestowed with a
Noor( Spiritual light) from under the Arsh (The Throne of Allah
Ta'ala) which will extend from the earth till the sky and will benefit
him in the darkness of the Day of Qiyaamah. All his (minor) sins which
he had committed from the previous Jumu'ah up to this Jumu'ah will be
forgiven. (Behishti Zewar)
10.Rasulullah Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said,
"Recite Durood upon me in abundance on the day of Jumua'h since they
are presented to me." (Ibne Majah)
11.On the day of Jumua'h it is Sunnat to apply oil to the hair and to
use itr or any other sweet smelling fragrance. (Bukhari)

THINGS TO AVOID DURING RAMADAN
1. Don't sleep during the day and pray all night. By doing this you are converting the day into night and the night into day, which is not the purpose of fasting.
2. Avoid being lazy and inactive during the day.
3. Don't waste time playing games during the day. Rather, please Allah by increasing in your worship of him..
4. Don't ask your wife to spend Ramadan in the Kitchen. Eat something light and quick. This way you'll give her more time for worship.
5. Spend the last 10 days worshiping Allah rather than trying to prepare for Eid! A night that is better than a thousand months is in these last 10 nights. You can't afford to miss this.
6. Dont stay awake the whole night. Your body has a right over you, and when it wants rest, then rest.
7. Avoid excessive socializing after Taraweeh
8. Avoid shopping a lot in Ramadan.
9. Don't eat all night.
10. Don't loiter around at night rather than worshiping Allah.
11. Eid doesn't require loads of preparation. Don't fall into this trap! Keep it simple, and it will be blessed.
Allah has blessed us with the Month of Ramadan, So make the most of it... in shaa Allah
